Earth Hour 2009 / 5:35 PM

If you haven't noticed all the Earth Hour hoo-ha going around, where have you been??

I'll have to say kudos to WWF for organizing this global event yet again - this is the 3rd year running for Earth Hour and I'm sure it took a lot of effort and hard work for those involved to pull this event together.

BUT.

What is 1 hour compared to the other 8759 hours of the year?

Earth Hour was being used as an "election" between Earth and global warming. I really don't get it. The target was to get 1 billion votes (by switching off your lights, or you could leave them on as a vote for global warming) to be presented to the world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. But I think we all should already know how bad our global warming situation is.

1 hour is not enough for any significant decline in the global electricity consumption. Is it really necessary to spend all that money on advertising? All that moolah could have been used for other more useful purposes, like.. Replacing the current light bulbs with energy-saving ones perhaps?

Anyway, my point is: Switching off your lights from 8.30pm to 9.30pm every last Saturday of March is not enough to make a difference. You can feel good about having "sacrificed" one hour in this battle against climate change in unity with the rest of the world, but what really should be conveyed to the world is to practice the habit of switching off all lights & electrical appliances whenever possible every day instead.

What our earth needs is real change, and that isn't going to happen overnight - and it will certainly take more than just an hour every year.

The Importance of Being Earnest / 4:36 PM

If it weren't for the annual A-Levels production in my college in which I was a part of back in December 2004, I would have never heard of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest. And no, obviously I did not act - I can't act to save my life if you must know - but I was part of the crew assisting with the whole production.

Anyway, I bet most people have not heard of it! Wen Ni, Grace and I went to the Drama Centre Theatre together to catch the show on Wednesday night. It was light-hearted fun! We were seated in the second row and the show started off with musical accompaniment from the T'ang Quartet and Hossan Leong (who acted as Miss Prism) handing out cucumber sandwiches (it might not sound very pleasant but I assure you that it tasted otherwise) to those seated in the front. Yay to good tickets!

Oh and yes. The whole show was brought to us by an all-male cast. To be truthful, I still can't decide whether it was a really interesting concept, or whether it gave me goosebumps. Ivan Heng and Hossan Leong were especially girly! But whether it worked or not, there was no doubt that the chemistry among the actors was amazing. We were constantly laughing from all the witty exchanges!

The 2 hour adventure of mixed identities came to an end fairly quickly and reality sank in - the time for relaxation is over and it's time to hit the books again. Oh well. It was nice to be out on a weekday for a change. :)

Mommy Dearest / 5:58 PM

I think it's really cute seeing my mom advancing with technology. Look at this email she sent to me & my sister! (Click on the picture to read it)

Oh and of course, she left us reminders to "make sure both of you don't follow her lifestyle".

Hahaha I love my mom. :D

Good vs Bad / 4:07 PM

So yesterday, we missed BOTH buses while walking to the bus stop. But surprisingly, another bus came 5 minutes later! Usually the buses don't come frequently during the weekends, so I was really thanking our lucky stars for not having to wait long in the heat. Looks like the day was starting on a good note!
Good: 1 vs Bad: 0

Yu Wen and I went for our haircuts at our usual. I love getting haircuts - it just feels relaxing (ok, except for that time I had that disastrous mushroom haircut - that was stressful). While getting our haircuts, it poured really heavily. But it stopped right after we were done! Hurrah!
Good: 2 vs Bad: 0

After our haircut, we didn't have anything in mind to buy so after window shopping for an hour, we decided to sit at Toastbox and talk away instead. Good coffee and yummy toast! No shopping = money saved.
Good: 3 vs Bad: 0

Wenz and Quen came to meet us at Ma Maison for dinner after their shopping rendezvous. It was our first time there and I love the traditional English cottage ambience in the restaurant. Very very cosy. We had to wait rather long to get into the restaurant, but the food was pretty satisfactory! Loved the sirloin steak with the tamari sauce and also the hamburger steak. And even though the restaurant was clearly understaffed, the customer service was still exceptional. We especially loved our cute Japanese waitress - the way she talked is just too cute!
Good: 4 vs Bad: 0

All 4 of us love desserts. As Wenz rationalized, our stomachs have a completely section for desserts hee! And just in case you were wondering, we are not in denial about being gluttons. We went to Liang Seah Street for Chinese desserts. I shared a bowl of yam paste and a bowl of tong yun with Yu Wen. My favourite hot desserts! Yay!
Good: 5 vs Bad: 0

So after a long day out, being the lazy bums that we are, we decided to take a cab back. Since there were 4 of us, splitting the cab fare would only be slightly more expensive than taking the MRT & bus back, so why not? AND we would save more time. Unfortunately, little did we know that it would be the worst cab ride of our lives. Within 5 minutes, we were all silent in the cab and suffering from horrible headaches. The journey back felt like an hour instead of the mere 20 minutes. I could feel my sirloin steak, hamburger steak, tong yun AND yam paste coming back up the way they came in. Urgh.
Good: 5 vs Bad:100!!!

¡Español! / 6:14 PM

I have a Spanish test next week! Haha just felt like typing a random post in Spanish. So many things to memorize man.

Back to the old school days.. Can't stop listening to 4 Non Blondes' What's Up. It's a super feel good sing along song! (:

Quickie / 1:45 AM

At only 20, my forgetfulness kinda scares me..

Cantemus was a good fun choir concert which was held last Saturday. So we went there to support a few of our friends who were in the choir. And we were about 5 minutes late even though we left early (I blame it on the slow service at Fig & Olive) so we missed the opening song! The 1.5 hours flew by real quickly though. Loved the second half for its vibrance. We headed to tcc for some coffee after, and we had a whole corner to ourselves with bean bags! So bad for our postures but so fun to sit on. :)

Day out with the sister yesterday! And also met our aunt & cousin for dinner. This only means one thing: an entire day of pigging out. Had cheeseburgers and fries (to satiate my cravings) for lunch and then Sushi Tei for dinner. The Story of Edgar Sawtelle was sold out in Borders! Le sigh. But I got The Perks of Being A Wallflower instead! Haven't started on it yet though. Haven't done my ironing either. There's a messy pile on my bed right now. Haven't completed my assignment. It's staring right back at me as I am typing this. Haven't replied emails. They are still starred in my inbox. Oh dear.

Sleep beckons!

Humour Me / 2:53 PM

Just found this funny, and yet scarily true in some ways. The question is: Are we putting too much stress on ourselves? Or is this caused by the rigidity of our society?

Sleeping To Dream / 8:36 PM

Despite the hot sunny days, I'm loving the cold nights with my hot cup of hazelnut coffee (or green tea OR Milo) in hand and Jason Mraz crooning live in the background. :)

Now if only I didn't have my SOA paper this Friday, else it'll be a cup of coffee AND a storybook in hand, instead of my calculator and pen. I've got a 30% discount voucher for Borders! Now I can go grab The Story of Edgar Sawtelle.

My mommy was here in Singapore on Monday. She flew here in the morning because she had 2 meetings to attend, then she flew back to KL at night. What a rush. But at least I got to meet her and Yean for lunch. I missed out on dinner with them because I had lessons. Boo! They had yummier food for dinner! But at least I got to see my mom.. Makes me miss home again.

I'm very tired of looking at probability questions, but I've got to get back to them!

P.S.: FML is quite an entertaining read for those of you who have not heard of it. :P

23 / 6:28 PM

To the sweetest boyfriend in the world, to the person who spends his 24/7 with me, to the person who makes me feel like I am the luckiest girl in the world, to the person whom I know I can count on no matter what..

Happy birthday baby!

We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things / 1:26 PM

The one thing that we were looking forward to this semester was Jason Mraz's concert - and it really surpassed all expectations we had! First of all, the concert felt really.. Organized. Haha. I'm comparing to the concerts in KL where you are squeezing with other people to get to the front of the pit so that you can get the best view and you always leave the concert sweating. But here, the concert was at an indoor stadium and there was air-conditioning AND everyone stays at their allocated seats. :O

Thanks to bus 11, we ended up late for the concert!! We missed the opening song!! ROAR. But the rest of the 1.5 hour set was just amazing. Bonus of the day was hearing Lucky. Totally did not expect that! I loved how he did a cover of Oasis' Wonderwall and Bob Marley's Everything's Going To Be Alright as well.

Setlist:
1. Dynamo Of Volition
2. Geek In The Pink
3. Unfold
4. You and I Both/Sleeping to Dream medley
5. Who Needs Shelter
6. Live High
7. Lucky (with Joy Chua)
8. Only Human
9. A Beautiful Mess
10. Make It Mine
11. I'm Yours/Everything's Going To Be Alright medley
12. Mr. Curiosity
13. The Remedy/Wonderwall medley
14. No Stopping Us
15. Butterfly

He's a really good performer - the way he engaged with the audience, getting everyone to sing along and the best part was probably when he took polaroid shots of everyone playing on stage including himself and threw them out to the audience! But all good things come to and end and it was a wrap at 10pm. After that it took us nearly half an hour to call for a cab (imagine hearing the annoying music tune while you are being put on hold!) and it also started pouring really heavily. Just our luck. Geez.

Love Snail Mail / 10:14 PM

The heat has gone up! All I want to do is stay in my room and turn on the air conditioning. Stupid weather.

But I got something special in the mail today that made me grin like an idiot, and the hot weather forgotten. :D

My mailbox smells like perfume now. Hee.

All Baked Out / 3:12 AM

My fingers ran across the piano keys. Strange. These keys were once so familiar and the melody used to flow so smoothly. But now, I cringe at the broken chords and a wave of regret fills me. I shouldn't have quit. I spent a lot of my childhood days focused on piano, I don't think I was really that good, but I just practiced a lot. I miss those piano days now, even the frustrating moments when I keep hitting the wrong note.. Oh well. Now it's just a memory.

Nostalgic thoughts aside, in about 8 more hours I'll be on the bus back to Singapore once again. No more mommy pampering me but back to the usual routines again.. Had a rather relaxing break and am glad I decided to stay home for the whole week instead of just a few days! Plus, this mad rush of baking will keep me satiated till the next time I come home. :P

Super green pandan cake.. Which in the end I didn't like. Zzz. I don't know what went wrong! Wasted my ingredients. And I suspect that my mom threw it out. Seriously.

Ok you probably can't tell that it's a jelly hearts cheesecake because I didn't take it out of the springform pan for the picture. But I love this recipe, it never fails me and my family loves it! :)

DEATH BY CHOCOLATE. Love how cute they are but will probably never do this again. Too time consuming!!
